I decided to use the same setting of the park, as I found it captured a sense of solitary, which supports the idea of someone suffering in silence with issues such as grief.
The footage in these shots proved to be much more stable than the handheld shots. The lack of camera movement in these shots seem to suggest a feeling to the audience of low energy in the shots, which could be used to convey the depressive tone in the negative segments of the story.
This reel also focused on capturing medium and close up shots of the subjects for convey emotion in their facial expressions. These shot types were inspired by the use of extreme close, close and medium shots in the western films made by Sergio Leone. These type of shots in his films exist to convey tone and emotion through visuals. I found that the shots types are able to convey emotion just as well in these samples. Therefore, the film will include this shots types of the subject when the audience will need a visual marker for any change of tone.
Some long shots were taken, so that I could measure the effect of the close to medium shots. The long shots proved more effective at establishing the subject in the setting but it subtracted focus on the subjects face, which might mean to the audience do not emote as easily. This is unless the aim of the shot were to be to show entire body language. Even then, without certain physical features on the character being framed correctly to pull the audience's attention, the shot will lack emotion.
As for the tripod itself, I found that setting it up took some time to do. For example, the legs had to be adjusted so that I could fit in the frame of the shot. the small built in spirit level had to be used to make sure the shot was not at a canted angle. The overall number of levers on the tripod meant that it could be confusing at times as to what there functions were. I also had issues with the public walking on the path that the tripod was set up on, which meant that the camera had to be moved then readjusted every time. This is more of a problem with the setting however. On a positive note, The tripod was able to hold the camera in place, which in turn, allowed me to free up my hands and be featured in the shots, without having to think to much about what the camera was doing.
I may see if extreme close cut ins of the body features are appropriate at convey body language to connote emotion, in the future.
The project will use more static tripod shots over handheld movement, as the still shots capture the idea of low energy, which can be used to communicate depression as on of the negative emotions and for the more low kinetic feel of the entire film.
Editing the shots together in a certain way will help to intensity the emotional tone that the shots are trying to express as well as any colour effects I make to the shots to also establish tone.
The next task is matching visuals to the first draft of the script, then reflecting on how it can be altered to better communicate the negative and positive aspects of my story with grief. Overall, the main focus is getting the visuals to convey the right emotions.
