The Rotoscope above is a documentary that follows an autistic teenager, walking into a local garage station to get a snack and a drink. Its purpose is to illustrate how a person with autism perceives the everyday day world around them. This is executed through a variety of methods.

Animation

The film features multiple styles of rotoscope animation that have distinctly different visual qualities. The use of multiple animation styles is meant to highlight the fact that autistic people perceive the world in a quirky and always changing manner. This is backed up by the numerous studies and experiments that have been done that show that autism allows for the person that has it too have a very unique and creative perception of the world.

For example, the video above shows the autistic artist Stephen Wiltshire, who was able to draw New York City from memory alone to exact detail. This highlights the hypersensitive abilities that autistic people possess.

The animation styles for 'Snack And Drink' feature the use of outlining, cartoons and texture manipulation. In terms of rotoscoping, outlining alters the subject in a film by distinguishing the edges. Cartoons such as the drink dispensers allows for representation and symbolism of emotions and themes through making theme literal beings. Using rotoscoping to alter textures of the background adds a sense of surrealism to the film and is a an aspect which can best represent the animation style itself.

Colour

In this example, colour isn't used as a vital convetion to convey the message. Instead, the colour palette switches recurrently, as this represents the sporadic nature of an autistic mind. therefore, colour is used just to illustrate a swift change in animation style.

Narrative

The documentary of this autistic teenager walking to a garage to get snacks is fairly minimalistic and simple. This could be due to the subject matter meaning to represent the mundane life through an eccentric perspective. Or in terms of technical aspects, the animation process is very time consuming and therefore the film would need to remain relatively short and the action taking place would need to stay simple, so that the rotoscope process can trace the outlines of he film more easily.

From this example of rotoscoping, I may consider using a minimalistic animation style, as filing and editing will require much time to undertake as well. primary research into potential animation styles will take place, so that a distinct visual style can be found that would best represent the subject matter and tone that I am wanting to achieve. This film has also shown how rotoscoping can be used to illustrate perspective of an individual, into the different way they view the world. As the project is meant to illustrate the my positive and negative aspects of grief, it will also need to show my perception of life in result of my experience with grief.
