Reflecting on images

From the images found, I have correlated links between some of them, in order to find an emerging concept for this project.

Here are the selected images:

From the combination of the images and points of inspiration above, I found that there is a tangible interest in digitised drawing and filmmaking.
From The Rubber Hose images, it shows that the minimalistic, yet exaggerated art style and movement are a core inspiration for some of my previous work in drawing and animation. The use of negative space in illustrations also captures my interest, due to the level of detail that can be shown through using just black and white. The monochrome colour palette also highlights the darker emotions out of things.

In terms of film, My general inspiration is that of the style of Spaghetti Westerns. This can be seen as the director Sergio Leone is shown above, who is known for his works in the genre. Quentin Tarantino is a director that he himself is inspired by Sergio Leone. This shows in his films, as certain conventions, such as letting the soundtrack take control of a scene and carefully chosen composition of shots, appear the likes of 'Kill Bill' and 'Pulp Fiction'. Casey Neistat is the inspiration for shooting very unique film shots that also take into account composition. For Example, one image above shows Casey from a top of a peak on a mountain, using a wide angle lense to further highlight the grand backdrop behind him.

Linking in with music, a couple of bands create songs that sometimes capture the Western genre. For example, as shown above, Both album covers for Black Honey and Muse's album 'Black Holes and Revelations' show an established setting in the desert, which could be considered the Arizona desert. Muse's cover shows 4 men sat down facing each other, whilst Black Honey's cover shows a bullet hole in the windscreen of a car. These two features connote a theme of confrontation and danger, both of which are part of a lexis that makes up the stereotypical idea of Wild West American culture.

From Looking at these images, I have decided to experiment in combining film with animation in a process called Rotoscoping. I will need to investigate how this process is done and further research will be done into both spaghetti westerns and Rubber hose art style, as well as experimenting with using negative space.
