Animation style sampling 1

When considering how to communicate my personal story with grief, I became obsessed with depictions of skeleton being used to convey themes surrounding death. I was inspired by the works of the artist N. Gracie, who creates art using bones and of bones. N. Gracie's use of black and white is similar to that of my own use of monochrome. Therefore I experimented with using black and white with skeletons.

This skull was first drawn from a real world image of a skull, using pencil, after which the outlines were gone over with an ink pen. I then decided experiment inverting the black and white so that white was a secondary element. The resulting drawing shows that details in reflections can be captured using a white pen on black ink. Using white on black could be more expressive.

I then used the same process to draw a ribcage. As seen above, using a white pen on black has create a sense of depth and light reflection on the ribs.

I continued to experiment withdrawing various skeletal body parts of the human being. This drawing of a hand was drawn, as I have struggled to draw hands in the past. This time, I have created white lines of reflection to align on the left edges of each bone shape because it suggests a source of light coming from the left. This has made the lines of reflection more realistic to the laws of physics.

The arm with a thumb up connotes an upbeat, humorous tone which is meant to represent the positive aspect of grief. The black and white colour scheme, with black being the primary element conveys the more negative tone. This contrast between negativity and positivity is what I am working towards with the subject matter of theses tones in my personal story with grief.

Now that I have obtained a minimalistic art style for the animation, I will try to contextualise the details to cohere to grief.
