Raw Cinematography- 'The climb'

This scene is meant to illustrate the climb towards positivity in my life, through using grief as tool to create art.

The shots were taken in the college, as this is where my development in my passion for drawing took place in real life.

I started with taking a long shot from behind the desk to establish the scene in which my character has moved too.

From the research i did into shallow focus in Christopher Nolan's 'The Dark Knight'. I decided to capture a a low angle shot of the main character drawing in their sketchbook. The purpose of the shallow focus of the table here is too make the clip less intimate. The idea behind this is that i wanted the audience not to be able to fully relate to the character here, as the character is undergoing a transition in mood. This is in contrast to the shallow depth of field of the character in earlier scenes, where the tone feels more intimate because of it. Therefore, the shallow depth of field which instead, blurs out the character this time around, acts as a visual marker for a development in the character and of the narrative as the tone shifts from negative to positive.

More close up shots of the character's face are present in this scene as well. Again, this shot type further emphasises the facial expressions and allows the audience to react to the character's reactions, which in the case, is the look of motivation.

When considering what to show the character creating, I came to the conclusion that I could feature the drawings I made for the potential animation earlier in the project. The decision to not include the animation in the film was made due to the fact that the animation process of drawing each frame would have been time consuming. I already wanted to explore the use of cinematography, editing and colour in my film and I had to decide which areas were more important in telling my story with grief, in a short amount of time. Instead of having the research and development of the day of the dead art style go to waist, The drawings were picked to illustrate how the character negative connotations of death, and uses it for a positive outlet, showing a narrative progression.

I will likely go back and add more shots in at a later date, as I feel that the scene needs more substance to show this positive progression in the character.
