The concept surrounding my experience with grief for this project was a
very personal subject matter to me, which therefore meant I could explore a
concept that I was very familiar with the context of losing someone.
Unfortunately, the early idea to use rotoscoping as a method of exploring the
concept proved to be too ambitious for the time set and had to be removed. In
the case of there being more time, the rotoscope animation would have been
developed. If the concept was returned to, the concept would consist of
exploring other medium other than just film. I have learned that it is more
effective at using something more personal and familiar to yourself when
creating art, as we should always feel passionate about the things we create.
The project has shown me that even the concept develops, just as much as the
project.
The research carried out in this
project was much more varied and in depth compared to research of other
projects. Instead of just focusing on inspirations that were close to the
subject matter, the project consisted of borrowing both technical and
conceptual aspects that helped in creating an original film. The research
lacked examples of work that tackled the same subject matter as this one. If
done again, the research would consist of films and other mediums of art that
also explore the positive and negative side of grief. With more time, the
project would have explored a wider range of inspirations that could have all
been used to create an even more original film. Whilst there is a wide range of
secondary research, there is little primary research done in this project. This
is because it was difficult to find any local exhibitions that had relevance to
a film project or showed any themes of grief. If I had more time, I would have
organised trips further afield. I have learnt to apply the research more
consistently with the development of the project. This has lead to the discovery anything can
act as research, as long as it influences the project in some way.
The choice to ask for assistance of other peers and family to operate
the camera resulted in more types of camera movement that became effective at
communicating the concept. There was problem with finding enough storage space
for all the video files, so most the footage was split onto different storage
devices. This problem slowed down the editing process, as the files were
disorganised. I would have obtained a larger external hard drive that would
have been capable of storing all the mp4 files that were produced. If there were
more time on this project, I would have used the assistance of others even more
so that there could have been examples of more appropriate camera movements.
This problem has showed that you can ask almost anybody to help you film a
clip, as long as you tell them exactly what your vision is. This lead to the
discovery that the process of filming will have better results if others can
assist you.
The daily plan blog posts were an organised way of consistently setting
new tasks and targets that structured the routine of each day clearly. However,
this idea to create a plan for every day was not always kept to and this meant
that some days had little work produced. I would have ideally kept to a
discipline of making a plan every day and an organised daily timetable would
have been produced to allocate time management for each task. Ultimately, the
daily plan has highlighted that everything things to be planned ahead. By
consistently planning ahead, this has gone to show that the days were made more
time efficient as a result.
I had explored multiple avenues in cinematography and editing that
helped the project to consider many ways to communicate the concept. The
cinematography lacked evidence of comparison shot to show that there was a
comprehensive use of decision-making. The filming blocks would have consisted
of more of the same shots but from different perspective. The cinematography and editing processes have
shown that feely experimenting with the camera and editing software can result
in finding new tools and ways to do things that might not have been obvious with
focusing on developing the film.
Including an evaluative paragraph on the end of each post allowed for
consistent reflection and evaluation on my progression in the project. There
was some disconnect between one evaluative paragraph to the next, which could
have been sorted by reflecting on past posts to clearly show a sense of
progression. I have learnt to be self critical of my work and the way in which
I carry it out, which has gone on to improve my work ethic and discipline for
the project.
The choice to present the project on a blog allowed all the work to
remain organised and easy to access, as well as having the ability to record
digital research and project work, which is something that would not have been
possible with a sketchbook. The drawback
of using the blog is that quick and immediate ideas and drawings could not be
made using the blog. Retrospectively, the sketchbook that was used to draw up
ideas would have been used more to illustrate ideas I had for the film. As a
result of the blogs limitations, methods such as uploading digital mind maps or
scanning pages of the sketchbook has allowed for ways for the ideas and
planning to be shown on the blog.
In conclusion, The main purpose of this project is to outline that
there is positive things as well as negative things that come from grief.
Hopefully, this project will help them in coming to a point of acceptance. If I
had an unlimited budget, the be exhibited through multiple film festivals and
cinemas over the globe, as showing the film to rooms full of people is an effective
way at gaining publicity. On an industrial level. The film could be distributed
on YouTube. This is because the website is free and the emerging global
popularity of web 2.0 sites such as YouTube would assure that the film reaches
a global audience. For the show, the film is being shown on a monitor as the
film can only be shown in this format.
