Vlogger style sample shots

From looking at Casey Niestat's vlog video on Youtube, I wanted to see whether using handheld movement, point of view shots and showing me hold the camera, would connote a sense of realism and allow the audience to relate to the Subject's story.

Therefore, I went out and tested some shots to see if they were appropriate for a subject matter that circles the serious tone of grief.

I filmed in on the college campus to begin with, where i found that  public obstruction in frame was common. So, I went out with no tripod, just my Canon E0S 1200D, to a local park where i could capture footage, where there was little problem with the public walking across the screen.

The point of view shots that showed the character walking through the environment were effective at connoting a feeling of realism, due to the natural human movement coming from the handheld movement. However, without a tripod to create stability of the camera. The clips resulted in being to shaky, so the audience may find it difficult to focus on anything. The point of view shots also lacked a sense of composition of the frame. For example, One shot that shows the legs walking, kept moving in and out of frame, so it is unclear as to the purpose of the shot.

The point of view shots do not show the subjects face, which is a problem, as I will require medium to close shots of the subject's face to allow for their facial expression to suggest the emotional tone of that scene. Therefore I decided to capture some medium to close up shots of my face from a vlog perspective of me holding the camera, whilst filming myself at the same time. I found that I could capture the facial expression through this method, but it was difficult to know what was in frame, as the camera did not have a preview screen I could see from the front of the camera.

This is an obstacle I am facing with using myself in the film, whilst also filming at the same time. However, the project is based on showing my personal story with grief, so i need to be in the film. The way around this that I found useful was taking multiple takes and then selecting the most appropriate shots.

The next samples of shots will consist of static shots that use a tripod. This will allow for me to find out, for the sacrifice of camera movement, if static shots can still help comunicate the changes of emotion in the story.
